Hello RJA,

Last year I met an ExplorOz member in the Simpson Desert who was logging coordinates for Hema Maps. He was sending the map information daily to Hema using a portable satellite broadband internet device (antenna) about the size of his laptop. He was connecting to Inmarsat satellites over WA/Indian Ocean. Try this site for further information; maybe it's what you're looking for !

The trouble with Bgan, AFAIK is that it only works reliably from the western side of the Simpson. Not much success as you work your way east because of the satellite's position.

Iridium do a data kit for their phones, where you can connect your laptop to the Net. It isn't cheap to use.

RJA,

As already mentioned by the posts, there are a number of options / systems that you can do portable satellite internet.

Just be aware that due to the antenna size with compact portable systems, the bandwidth - size of the "pipeline" to/from your system - will be small and that you will find it very slow and time consuming if you intend trying to browse the internet. That's why you see "outback" places with large satellite dishes - it's so they can get a reasonable bandwidth via satellite. So much easier with copper wire / cable...!!!

Sending/receiving emails will be easier and slightly faster, but then if you start adding photos etc as attachments to the email, it will increase the time for the email to get transmitted.

Cheers,
Guy

Thanks for all of the feedback. Along the way I found this link.

The costs seem excessive to say the least for the traveller. Might be OK for some businesses, but not for me.

Thanks again.
